Luckily in the US you are spoilt for choice when it comes to places for sailing, in order to help you narrow down your list we have put together some of the best places to sail to save you the time.

San Juan Islands, Washington

If you are looking for an all year round place to go sailing then look no further than San Juan Islands in Washington. The climate here is sailing-friendly from summer where the temperatures are on average 70 degrees and in winter they stay around the 40s. Not only is the weather here great, it is located off of the state’s coast past Bellingham Bay and offers incredible views.

Key West, Florida

Florida Keys provide an iconic getaway from the mainland of the United States. During the summer months at Key West are the most favoured time for sailing as the nearby reefs are at their most visible. For the strongest wind, the best times to sail are January to April and then hurricane season begins in June until November. As a popular sailing spot with tourists, there is the opportunity to have lessons and rent sailing equipment if you do not have your own.

Santa Catalina Island, California

For a more peaceful sailing destination, the tranquil channel island of Santa Catalina is a world away from the hustle and bustle of the built up Los Angeles just a short boat ride away. For the weather, it is recommended to visit during the spring and fall months as the weather is most reliable. Sanata Catalina has a number of small bays to anchor at and beautiful white sandy beaches to explore for when you want a break from sailing.

Hudson River Valley, New York

Although mainly known for vineyards, orchards and peaceful New York living, the Hudson River is also a firm favourite amongst sailors due to the wide expanse of river that stretches for miles. As a more sheltered area of water away from open lakes and oceans, the Hudson River is great for those who want to try out sailing equipment for the first time and learn how to sail. If you don’t have your own boat you can hire them for day long or sunset sails to sightsee from the water.
