Summer is now here and what better way to escape the heat and humidity of the city than to jump in a convertible car, with the top down, wind blowing in your hair as you head off on the highway in search of adventure.  Now, in addition to being home to some of the best road trip songs in the world, such as “Born To Be Wild” America is home to some of the best road trips in the world too.

In this article we’re going to look at five of the best of the hundreds of road trip ideas to take this summer, but one consideration you might want to think about even before planning your route is to work out what vehicle this adventure should be taken in.  For instance, is your current car really the best vehicle to be taking across country or would it be better to rent a car, or better still, rent an RV, as this way you don’t need to worry so much about the toll the journey will take on your vehicle, and it won’t be your responsibility to carry out motorhome and RV repairs and service on the road.

That said, you might want to consider taking out the zero excess insurance option as on such long drives, the odds of having an accident whilst driving are greatly higher.

US ROUTE 20

Travelling from coast to coast along Route 20, which is the longest road in America covering a whopping 3,365 miles from Newport to Boston, is a great way to explore the entire country.  En route you will find places such as Yellowstone National Park which can make for a lovely place to stop for a few days.

CALIFORNIA STATE ROUTE 1

Summer is the best time of year to take this trip by fair, as the route will be soaked in sun with optimal daylight hours throughout the next couple of months.  The route will take you along the Pacific coast starting just north of San Diego and then leads you through Los Angeles where you’ll have the opportunity to drive through Long Beach, Malibu, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, Big Sur, and San Francisco.

This route is a comparably shorter trip at just 745 miles, but it is punctuated with some great stop offs along the way, and the road predominantly hugs the California coastline making it one of the best summer road trips in the world, let alone the US, excellent for those who love surfing! ROUTE 66

Perhaps the most famous “road trip” in the world, yet not necessarily as beautiful as California’s Coastal route the route starts in Chicago and makes its way to Santa Monica covering 2,451 miles through arid climates akin to those you would find in old western movies.

FLORIDA KEYS

The US 1 from Miami to Key West is a short 150 mile drive that takes in a variety of the keys sandwiched between the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean.  The majority of this route is surrounded by the ocean with the most stunning section of the route being the Seven Mile Bridge.

MONUMENT VALLEY

Here, you can visit Flagstaff, the Grand Canyon, and plenty of other cowboy inspired landscapes found on the Arizona/Utah border.  Indeed, a great way to explore this region is by taking a Jeep Safari along the Diamond Creek Road that will take you along the bottom of the Grand Canyon.
