Iceland might be home to one of the most fascinating landscapes on the planet. While beneath the surface of the Earth, volcanoes are teetering on the edge of eruption and geothermal activity is very high, the surface is usually an ice-covered vista. There’s a mix of city exploration and incredible, one-of-a-kind natural scenery on offer in Iceland, and you’ll definitely need a few days to explore it to the extent it deserves. Many people choose to look at motorhome rental in Iceland as this offers you greater flexibility to fit everything in. Let’s have a look at a few of the essential things that you don’t want to miss while you’re in Iceland.
Visit the Golden Circle
If you’re here for the landscapes and the natural beauty of Iceland, then you’re here for the Golden Circle. You’re best exploring this part of Iceland with time to spare, as there are a few things you’ll definitely not want to miss.
Chief amongst these attractions is the Gullfoss Waterfall (or Golden Falls) to experience a waterfall that could easily be mistaken for a real life painting, and easily one of the most jaw dropping sights in Iceland. Don’ forget to spend some of your day at the Geysir Hot Springs, a very active area and home to the Strokkur Geysir which is constantly spouting hot water to heights of over 100 feet.
There is much more to see in the Golden Circle, so don’t leave it out of your itinerary.
The Famous South Coast
If you speak to friends who have been to Iceland, they’ll likely tell you all about the south coast. This is where the landscape of Iceland really shows off, with many breath-taking waterfalls and powerful volcanos (including the infamous Eyjafjallajökull Volcano, responsible for disrupting air travel across Europe in 2010). If you’re the outdoors type, don’t skip a chance to hike a glacier and put your feet onto one of the renowned black beaches in the area.
Spend Some Time in the City
If you’re only in Iceland for a short amount of time and looking for a 3 day itinerary, then your third day is when you should hit the city of Reykjavik. Don’t overlook spending some time here. The city has everything you could want from a day in the Iceland capital. You can start off your day by visiting some of the culture rich museums and learn more about the country and its Viking roots with visits to the National Museum of Iceland and the Perlan Museum – both well worth a visit. Once lunchtime hits, you’ll be spoilt for choice, as the city has no shortage of traditional Icelandic food and drink on offer.
After lunch, take a break from learning and take some time to explore the shops and stop for a drink in a pub as the sun sets and watch the daytime bustle of the city give way to a vibrant nightlife.
This list only scratches the surface of what you might see or do in Iceland as a tourist. You’ll need much longer than a few days to fully explore the many different activities and sights that Iceland is famous for, which is why so many visitors to Iceland make a return to visit again!
